Band

The Dan F. Long Middle School Band is a Texas UIL CC band consisting of students in grades 6-8 in the Carrollton – Farmers Branch School District. Our students start band in the sixth or seventh grade in homogeneous classes – flute, double reed, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium/tuba and percussion. The seventh and eighth grade students that complete beginning band are placed into one of our two class performing groups – Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band. All bands meet every day for 50 minutes, and students in the Wind Symphony also attend a once a week, 30-minute sectional rehearsal outside of the regular school day throughout the school year. Private lessons are strongly encouraged and are available during the school day. We also offer a very successful Jazz Band Program, that meets once a week after school on Fridays.

All of the Dan F. Long Middle School Bands perform at events and concerts throughout the year. All 7/8th grade band students perform at pep rallies, an 8th grade football game, Fall Concert, Winter Concert, CFBISD pre-UIL Contest, UIL Contest, Spring Concert and other band contests in the North Texas area. The Beginner Band perform in the fall as homogeneous groups and as a band for the Winter Concert, Spring Concert, and one other contest in the DFW area. Students involved in our Jazz Band get the opportunity to perform in various additional concerts throughout the metroplex.

Pathways

Beginning Instrument Class: (Instruments available: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Percussion): available to 6^th and 7^th graders who have never played music before. We teach students how to read music, play the instrument, and give them the skills to play in the advanced middle school and high school band.

Symphonic Band: Available for students who have completed one year Beginning Band and have been approved to move on by the directors. This is our “Non-varsity” group, for 2^nd and 3^rd year players. We teach students how to play in a group, and help prepare them to play in our Varsity band, and eventually the High School band. We perform 4 concerts a year, play at one football game, and a pep rally.

Wind Symphony: Available for students who have completed one year Beginning Band and have been approved to move on by the directors. This is our Varsity group, available to really advanced 2^nd year players, and 3^rd year players. We perform 4 concerts a year, play at one football game, and a pep rally.

Jazz Band: This is an afterschool program that meets once a week. This is available to all Wind Symphony, and Symphonic Band Students. We learn how to play Jazz, Improvise, and perform concerts at the school, as well as in various locations in our community.
